Team Brandon Valley travels to Omaha

The Team Brandon Valley boys and girls traveled south this weekend to take on some great competition at the Mark and the Fieldhouse in Omaha. As always, our athletes were ready to play and had a strong showing. This hard work is being recognized, earning our boys varsity team the #5 spot in the Prep Hoop Dakotas area 17U top basketball teams. Way to go!

The Team Brandon Valley varsity players earned a first place finish at the Omaha Sports Academy tournament last weekend.

Bria Cady, 6th grade: Bria Cady had a solid tournament on both offense and defense last weekend. Coach Klumper said she played offense with an aggressive mindset, taking the ball strong to the basket. She did a nice job of catching the pass ready to shoot and knocked down key shots. On defense, Bria was always in the right position, either to cut her girl off from driving or rotating over to help her teammates. In all four games, Bria, who is very coachable, showed great hustle and effort. When Bria grows up she tells us she wants to play in the WNBA and her favorite thing about playing basketball is getting to meet new people. She shared the Brandon Valley athlete she most admires is Mara Schaap.

Alex Tietjen, 11th grade: Alex brought his play to a new level this weekend, aggressively dominating on both ends of the floor. Coach Scholten said he had countless blocks and points to help lead our team to a championship win. Alex tells us his favorite subject in school is science and he plans to be an engineer when he grows up. His favorite thing about playing basketball is getting to travel with his friends. His most memorable basketball memory goes back to 5th grade, when teammate Evan Talcott made a key basket while falling out of bounds.

Tyler Westcott, 9th grade: Tyler has been Mr. Consistent this year. His coaches commend Tyler for always playing with a high energy level. They love that he gives the same level of effort whether it's practice or a game and whether his team is winning or losing. In fact, Tyler says his favorite part of playing basketball is the fast pace of the sport. Tyler is a great teammate and a super kid. When he is older he wants to be a mechanical engineer and his all-time favorite BV player is Matt VandenBerg.
